In the past 3 years, LNG demand from emerging markets has led to a rise in speculative FSRU orders. However with political instability and low credit ratings in these emerging economies, import projects in these countries were either delayed or cancelled, leading to an oversupply of FSRUs. There is now a dynamic market shift towards more mature gas markets with necessary supporting infrastructure, long-term projects and for some even with gas-to-power projects in place.
