The Barossa gas and condensate project to backfill Darwin LNG is 55% complete as “FPSO fabrication, subsea hardware manufacture and planning of the gas pipeline and sub-sea campaigns are all progressing as planned”, said the project’s operator Santos.

According to the Global LNG Database®, in Sept. 2022, Australia's Federal Court ruled in favour of an indigenous group's challenge against a drilling permit for Santos’ Barossa gas development, in what Santos called a "disappointing" setback for the $3.6 billion project.
Traditional landowners from the Tiwi Islands had asked the court in June to overturn drilling approval for the Barossa project.
However, Santos had said the decision should be reviewed by the Full Federal Court, given the significance of the decision to the company, its international joint venture partners and customers. "Project approval uncertainty is a public policy issue that should be urgently addressed by Australian governments to reduce risk for trade and investment in projects around the country," Santos added.
Santos has reminded that “the drilling activities are not on the critical path for the project and we have headroom in the project cost contingency."
In December, Santos’ appeal of this decision was dismissed by the Full Federal Court. “Santos is now proceeding with applications for all remaining approvals in accordance with the guidance provided by the Court. The timing of the resumption of drilling activities on Barossa is uncertain and subject to regulatory approvals.”

Barossa gas field is located in Australian waters off the Northern Territory of Australia. Barossa is intended to be developed using subsea wells tied back to an FPSO for gas processing and condensate export. A 260-Km gas export pipeline will transport gas to the existing Bayu-Undan pipeline for onwards transport to the 3.7 MMT/Y Darwin LNG.
Barossa is expected to extend the operating life of Darwin LNG by more than 20 years with the LNG production was expected to start in 2025. The current gas supply from the Bayu-Undan offshore field is expected to be exhausted this year.
