TotalEnergies and INPEX have signed an agreement with PTTEP to acquire the 100% interest held by the Thai state-run company in the AC-RL7 permit in Australia.
TotalEnergies will acquire a 26% interest in the permit while INPEX will acquire the remaining 74% and assume operatorship. The permit covers an area of 418 sq.km in the Timor Sea, approximately 250 km northeast of the Ichthys offshore facilities.
This permit includes the Cash and Maple gas and condensate fields, discovered in 2002 and 1989 respectively, and subsequently appraised by several wells, the French major said, adding that the development of these fields is expected to contribute to the long-term supply of the Ichthys LNG export plant as they “will help us to meet the long-term demand of our customers in the Asia-Pacific region for LNG.”

According to the Global LNG Database®, Ichthys LNG export plant’s shareholders are INPEX (operator) 66.245%, TotalEnergies 26%, CPC Corporation, Taiwan 2.625%, Tokyo Gas 1.575%, Osaka Gas Australia 1.2%, Kansai Electric Company 1.2%, JERA 0.735% and Toho Gas 0.42%.
The LNG plant currently has a capacity of 8.9 MMT/Y and the Japanese operator started a debottlenecking project aimed to increase its capacity by 4.5% to 9.3 MMT/Y by 2024.
Debottlenecking works to increase Ichthys LNG facility’s capacity are under way as it accelerates participation in exploration of new gas resources in the vicinity of the Ichthys field with a view to expand the plant and ensure a sustained LNG production volume over the long term.
