India's Jafrabad Port LNG terminal to be commissioned next year
2021/08/26
Swan LNG-operated floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), located off the Jafrabad Port in western Gujarat state, will be commissioned in April, raising the country's LNG imports capacity by 12%.
India’s private firm Swan Energy said that its Swan LNG-operated floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), located off the Jafrabad Port in western Gujarat state, will be commissioned in April, raising the country's LNG imports capacity by 12% to 47.5 MMT/Y.
The 5 MMT/Y floating LNG terminal was initially expected to be commissioned in the first quarter of last year, but the pandemic and two cyclones have delayed construction of a breakwater, needed to make it an all-weather facility, P Sugavanam, chairman of Swan LNG told Reuters. "The breakwater should be completed by March."
Swan LNG had said that it is also setting up a jetty and will build more tanks to eventually double the LNG import capacity.
According to the Global LNG Database®, the Jafrabad Port FSRU project’s shareholders are Swan Energy 63% Gujarat Maritime Board 15%, Gujarat State Petronet 11% and MOL (through its unit FSRU Venture India One Private) 11%.
Due to the project’s postponements, Ghana's Tema LNG is currently using the 180,000-CM Vasant FSRU which was originally allocated for the Indian terminal. The Vasant facility built by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and has been commissioned in Oct. 2020.

India, the world's fourth largest LNG importer, wants to raise the share of natural gas in its energy mix to 15% by 2030, from the current 6.2% to cut emissions. New demand for LNG from India is expected to support Asian gas prices which rose to record highs earlier this year, partly aided by the transition from coal or oil to gas in developing countries, Reuters reported.
