Tortue Ahmeyim FLNG project is over 80% complete, eyeing next phase
2022/08/10
Kosmos Energy has said that the first phase of the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim FLNG project in Mauritania-Senegal “continues to make good progress” and was over 80% complete at the end of 2022-Q2.
Kosmos Energy has said that the first phase of the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim FLNG project in Mauritania-Senegal “continues to make good progress” and was over 80% complete at the end of 2022-Q2 as construction and mechanical completion activities on the floating gas liquefaction facility continue and commissioning work has begun.

According to the Global LNG Database®, the 2.5 MMT/Y Tortue Ahmeyim FLNG project’s partners are BP (operator) 61%, Kosmos 29%, Mauritanienne des Hydrocarbures et de Patrimoine Minier (SMHPM) 5% and Petrosen 5%.

Floating gas production (FPSO) facility’s mechanical completion loop checks continue and commissioning work has commenced, the piling installation is nearing completion and the living platform is currently in transit to site, Kosmos said, adding that the project’s subsea equipment has begun to arrive in region and installation of the export pipeline has commenced as two of the four wells required for first gas drilled and the third well is in progress.
However, the company has conceded that due to the lockdown of the FPSO yard in April and the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions in Chinas, the FPSO sailaway date is now expected to be in the fourth quarter “with the same high level of completion prior to sailaway (previously expected to be end of the third quarter). We continue to target first gas in the third quarter of 2023 with first LNG end-2023.”
The FPSO will supply feedgas to the Golar LNG-operated Gimi FLNG unit which to be utilized for this project for 20 years under a Lease and Operate Agreement (LOA) with BP.

Meanwhile, Kosmos has remarked that the plans to develop and optimize second phase of the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim FLNG project continue to progress. “Given the change in the global gas markets in 2022, the partnership is working closely with host governments to evaluate the optimal solution to best utilize the infrastructure associated with Phase 1 of the project. A development decision is planned at the end of the third quarter.”
“To optimize the commercial value of sales for the gas production from Greater Tortue Ahmeyim, Kosmos plans to utilize existing contractual rights under our Phase 1 LNG sales agreement to divert cargos to prospective buyers in order to benefit from the current market environment.”
BP is the sole buyer of Tortue Ahmeyim project’s first phase LNG production under a 20-year LNG SPA.
