Snam has said that commissioning works on its new floating LNG imports terminal (FSRU) at Piombino are underway and it is expected to start commercial operations by the end of May.

According to the Global LNG Database®, the Piombino terminal project’s construction works started in November 2022. The Italian government had approved plans for the rapid construction of the Piombino terminal, despite social oppositions from the local community, as it looks to make up for a shortfall of Russian gas imports.
“With receipt of authorisation to begin operation of our regasification vessels, we take the first step in the re-modelling of our national energy security, which will soon have to be accompanied by the expansion of transport and storage infrastructure and an acceleration of initiatives for the transition, in which Snam expects to play a leading role. This is the only way we can transform the current crisis into an opportunity for the construction of our future energy paradigm,” Stefano Venier, Snam S.p.A. CEO had said earlier.

Last week, Eni had offloaded the first LNG cargo into Snam-operated Piombino terminal which was loaded at Egypt’s Damietta LNG plant.
Eni is the terminal’s main regasified LNG off-taker “as part of its strategy to diversify LNG supplies to Italy through its internationally produced equity gas” and “implement its plan to completely replace Russian gas by 2024-2025.”

On 20 Mar. 2023, Golar Tundra FSRU has berthed at Italy’s Piombino port to start its LNG storage and regasification services for the 3.8 MMT/Y LNG imports project.

Meanwhile, Snam has reminded that the Italian company faces the coming winter “with a much stronger and more resilient energy system thanks to storage facilities that are still 65% full."
