Rio Grande LNG progressing as NextDecade focuses on the project's expansion
2023/11/14
NextDecade has said that its Rio Grande LNG first phase project (Train1&2) was approximately 8.1% complete (engineering 35.7%, procurement 14.1% and construction 0.2%) by the end of 2023-Q3.
NextDecade has said that its Rio Grande LNG first phase project’s Train1&2 was approximately 8.1% complete (engineering 35.7%, procurement 14.1% and construction 0.2%) by the end of 2023-Q3.
NextDecade has made a positive final investment decision (FID) to construct the first three liquefaction trains (Phase 1) at its Rio Grande LNG (RGLNG) export facility in July.

According to the Global LNG Database®, the 17.6 MMT/Y Rio Grande LNG project’s first phase will utilize Air Products’ APCI-C3MR liquefaction technology.
Bechtel is the main EPC contractor of the $12 billion project under a lump-sum turnkey contract and Baker Hughes has been awarded an order by Bechtel to supply three Main Refrigerant Compressors (MRCs) for the project. “In total, Baker Hughes will supply six Frame 7 gas turbines paired with 18 centrifugal compressors.”

Now, NextDecade focuses on “commercializing and achieving a positive FID for Train 4 in the second half of 2024, and subsequently progressing Train 5 as it expects construction of these trains “should be advantaged due to the common facilities” as well as “potential labor optimization with a timely Train 4 FID.”
Bechtel has made “meaningful progress” on purchase orders for Train 3 and is focused on mobilizing labor and equipment and preparing temporary facilities at the site, NextDecade said, adding that it has started the FEED and EPC contract processes with Bechtel for Train 4 and expects to finalize the EPC contract in the first half of 2024.”

Achieving a positive FID of this FERC approved expansion capacity at the Rio Grande LNG project will be subject to, among other things, finalizing and entering into EPC contracts, entering into appropriate commercial arrangements, and obtaining adequate financing to construct each train and related infrastructure, NextDecade has reminded.
